The Final Straight – Picks

With the international break upon us, there’s no Premier League this weekend!

However, when they come back from their week away the players will be thrown straight back into the Premiership pit, and with only eight games to go the pressure is about to raise up a notch!

With this in mind, here’s the players and teams we expect to have a particularly strong end to the season – maybe you should look at your team ahead of the big finish?

MignoletSimon Mignolet
The Belgian had a rocky start to the season along with the rest of Liverpool’s defence, but in the last 10 games they have only conceded 5 goals, all against teams in and around them in the chase for Europe. Liverpool have a relatively easy run in, with Arsenal and Chelsea their only real challenges. With the other games being against teams like Stoke City, West Brom, Hull City etc. you can expect Mignolet to keep a handful of clean sheets in the eight games remaining.

LescottJoleon Lescott
I’ve mentioned Lescott before, I think he is a great defender and could easily cut it in European football still. West Bromich Albion under Tony Pulis have adopted a strategy which is wholly dependent on not conceding goals – it is this strategy which looks set to guide WBA comfortably towards safety. Their next three games are against QPR, Leicester and Pulis’ last club Crystal Palace, and he will be fully expecting his team to keep clean sheets in all three games. Lescott will be expected to lead the back line, and will almost certainly play every minute of their remaining games. Not only will he be instrumental in WBA’s defensive style, but he is also a threat from set pieces and could easily notch up with a goal or two before the end of the season!

R MasonRyan Mason
Tottenham Hotspur is another club I expect to have a strong end to the season. 10 points from their last 5 games (the 3-0 defeat at Manchester United the only black mark) shows a club on the rise, and while bigger names are grabbing the headlines, the emergence of 23 year old Ryan Mason as the foundations of the Spurs midfield is just as unexpected. His performances have been extremely solid in what is otherwise a chaotic and inconsistent midfield, and his England call-up shows that he needs to be taken seriously. Probably one of the cheaper and overlooked players on most fantasy football sites, this could be one of your cheekiest signings yet!

GiroudOlivier Giroud
The gunners are renowned for finishing seasons strongly, and this season looks no different. Arsenal have won 9 of their last 10 games and are seen by some as the only obstacle between Chelsea and a stroll to the title. Giroud is, in my opinion, the best natural striker in the league right now behind Harry Kane and I fully expect him to notch up a good tally of goals in the games left.
